The Henley Royal Regatta

"For some, Henley is all about strawberries and champagne, for others it is blood, sweat and tears"

PlayerLayer spent the day with Dulwich College at the Henley Royal Regatta. We followed their raceday rituals and began to understand the effort and work that goes into rowing.

The Regatta lasts for five days, over the first weekend in July. Races are head-to-head knock out competitions, raced over a course of 1 mile, 550 yards. It is a cut throat tournament. Unfortunately, Dulwich were victims of the knock out nature of Henley in what was described as 'the race of the day'.

As the Henley Regatta pre-dates any national or international rowing organisation, it has its own rules and organisation, so it really is a great British sporting tradition.

PlayerLayer joined the Dulwich College team at the house they had rented for the duration of the Regatta. They were busy preparing for their race, meeting with officials and watching videos of previous races.

We met the Dulwich team back at their boat house to grab a few photos while they prepared to get out on the water for a warm up. After that they donned their new PlayerLayer Gilets and headed off for some food.

PlayerLayer are working closely with Dulwich College to design a new rowing range of sports clothing.

After wishing the team  good luck, and grabbing a few shots of them getting ready for their race, we headed back to the stewards tent for a good view of the event.

After an early lead the Dulwich boys were neck and neck with their opponents, but began to tire a little and their opponents slipped ahead. Fighting hard,  Dulwich unfortunately could not get the lead back and lost by a very narrow margin.

PlayerLayer have fully embraced the world of rowing and love what the sport stands for.

On the day of the race a Dulwich College spectator was overheard saying " If one of the guys misses a session, they all miss a session".

We spoke to another Royal Regatta spectator, his hair was white and his blazor striped; the classic look of a rowing veteran. He quoted his son to us " sweat is when my muscles cry ". We thought this summarised the passion that goes into the sport.

Many Thanks to Jack Neville for his photography services on the the day of the event.
